Who we are

We are a group of local citizens and expats ourselves, with a varied professional background, having one strong characteristic in common: we are fond of living in Brasilia.

Born in the city or moved to it for various reasons, we all merged into it, struggled, solved problems, overcame cultural and linguistic hurdles, started from zero and finally installed our professional and private lives with success.

After all, we learnt to live with and in Brasilia: when we needed help, we got it from strangers, who are now our best friends. At the beginning, we often lost our way, – now we go anywhere without a navigator. We know where to get the best meat, we may indicate a fancy bar for a cold chopp after work, or recommend a Brazilian restaurant that only locals frequent.

And: we never stop learning something new about Brasilia because it is changing its face permanently, – growing, developing its personality, becoming more and more international, globalized. Along with this development, we are improving our knowledge, our professional and social net work every day, and at the same time have amazing experiences.

You are invited to share these wonderful moments with us!

Marion Riedel-Niklahs, dipl.sc.oec., German, is the founder of HOM-ing. Since August 2008 she lives and works in Brasilia. As a multi-lingual person (German, English, Portuguese, Spanish, French) and world citizen, her life philosophy is:

I feel at home wherever I meet like-minded people to live with, – independently of geography, race or religion.

It seemed strange to her that so many of the newcomers apparently did not like Brasilia and felt somehow lost, disappointed or even depressed. Often, after a 3-years-term, expats left Brasilia with little or no knowledge of Portuguese and without having made Brazilian friends. Her concern grew that an injustified image of Brasilia would be spread by those who failed to adjust to the city.

At the same time, she was determined to find a solution and to create opportunities and positive experiences for the ones who come to temporarily live in Brasilia from the very first moment they arrive. She brainstormed on how one could continue the own career in order to maintain „sophistically“ busy and to make the best use of a stay in Brasilia.

The idea for HOM-ing was born!

Her passion stands for mutual understanding, tolerance, acceptance, interest and respect among hosts of a country and their guests from abroad, – and vice-versus.

With the World Cup 2014 ahead, Brasilia prepares itself to become even more attractive to tourists, business people and newcomers.

HOM-ing wants to be part of this process.
